They slip a golden key under the welcome mat of the internet,
pretending only the righteous could ever find it.
Then howl in outrage when a stranger finds it first
and waltzes through every door left ajar.
In one breath, they curse the backdoor that betrayed them;
in the next, they insist we carve that same backdoor into each of our locks.
A senator pounds the podium in the spotlight,
conjuring bogeymen — terrorists lurking behind every encrypted screen —
to scare us into surrendering the keys to our lives.
This is security theater at its finest:
a grand show of outrage and fear on center stage,
while real safety quietly slips out the back.
The senator cannot fathom the paradox he’s scripted:
the door he swears is “for good guys only” swings open just as wide for villains.
Yet the performance continues, facts be damned,
and digital hypocrisy takes a bow.
The curtain falls on this absurd charade:
backdoors for all, privacy for none.
